The differences between FE and HE are slight and subtle but they are significant, and recognising and then managing these differences is a challenge for many educators and their managers.
This session helps people to explore and identify the differences between the two types of provision, to find and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching resources for the different levels, and to design programmes that provide the necessary progression and challenge to the students.
Class management techniques
The notion of having a large class of students all looking at the board or screen whilst the tutor chalks and talks contradicts ideologies of individual learning, different learning styles, and collaborative learning.
One way to achieve the above ideologies is to split a large class into smaller groups. This session looks at different mechanisms, techniques and tips to do this easily, effectively, and avoiding conflict, whilst increasing the opportunities for learning.
Dealing with Challenging Behaviour
This session looks at what is challenging behaviour, why students exhibit this sort of behaviour, and most importantly some practical techniques for dealing with and managing it.
The Disability Discrimination Act in the classroom
In 2001 the Disability Discrimination Act was changed to include education within it (This became known as the SENDA act). 6 years on, and there is still widespread non-intentional discrimination taking place within education. This session looks at how simple changes to a teachers practice can make huge differences to the accessibility of the learning for all students (not just those with disabilities).
Using learning theories to learn about learning theories
This highly innovative session uses a variety of different learning theories to teach the different learning theories themselves, including practical suggestions to bring these theories into everyday teaching.
